I'm cleaning the office/library today so I'm taking advantage of our ill-gotten booty from napster and other file sharing programs of yore. I'm smart, but I've never sat down to figure out how to play continuous collections of music so I'll choose a song I want to hear and then it will play a couple of times and I'll walk back over to the computer and change songs.

One that has played now for at least the last ten minutes is James Taylor's Copperline.

It is undoubtedly MY FAVORITE SONG. There are some close seconds, but it does not matter my mood, I always want to hear this song. There are several reasons.

First, James Taylor is a North Carolina boy at heart. That's important.

Second, the song was co-written by James and Reynolds Price, one of my favorite NC writers. He wrote Kate Vaiden, a character I once took my "Kate" screen name from.

Third, the song is just plain soothing. Granted, it's more about Georgia than NC, but it still talks about memories and how important they are.

And finally, this verse:

"Day breaks and the boy wakes up and the dog barks and the bird sings and the sap rises and the angels sigh..."

gets me every time.

I can remember waking up in the summer, always later than everyone else and having my family around me already up and doing things. My mom, in particular, already being up and caring for our house and her family was very secure and protecting feeling. Our backyard had three big live oak trees, ala the South, and was home to many, many birds who were always singing. We never had a dog, but the surrounding neighbors' yards were full of them. I can really remember (or am I projecting memories on good times?) waking up and feeling secure, and happy, and loved. I could hear the angels sigh.

It's a good memory and this song celebrates it.
